The historic town of Katikati is known as ‘New Zealand’s Mural Town’ and the ‘Avocado Capital of New Zealand’. Nestled between the foothills of the Kaimai Ranges and the stunning Tauranga harbour, on SH2, 28km south of Waihi and 40km north-west of Tauranga City. The town lies next to Uretara Stream near a tidal inlet near the northern end of Tauranga Harbour and at the foothills of the Kaimai Mamaku Forest. Home also to a 'Haiku Pathway', it boasts the largest collection of Haiku’s outside of Japan, and there are hot springs three kilometres to the south at Sapphire Springs. Aongatete is a settlement and rural community located on the south of Katikati and offers a landscape of a long valley descending into the Tauranga Harbour. The local Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park includes walks through Puriri and Kohekohe forest, along the Aongatete Stream, and to swimming holes.
Tanners Point, initially called Frazer’s Point and a natural reserve, is a rural community on a headland on the eastern side of Tauranga Harbour, opposite Katikati Entrance, and has a reserve and walkway that preserve its coastal areas.
