Otūmoetai is a suburb of Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand. The Otūmoetai peninsula includes both the Otūmoetai suburb, and the neighbouring suburbs of Matua and Bellevue.
The name is claimed to translate to ‘Peaceful Waters’ from Māori to English, as the Matua Saltmarsh and Tauranga Harbour borders Otūmoetai. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of ‘place where the tide stands still as if asleep’ for Ōtūmoetai.
In the 21st century, the suburb has gone through intensification with the building of apartments. Otumoetai, Tauranga, is a wonderful residential area that boasts numerous established homes, many of which enjoy north-facing positions and scenic views of Mount Maunganui. Cherrywood Village, in particular, stands out as a local gem with its diverse range of specialty shops and restaurants, creating a vibrant and beloved community hub.
Our ‘pocket of paradise’ is highly sought after for its proximity to the CBD, its excellent educational facilities, and its scenic setting near the waterfront and estuary. It also appeals greatly to outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for activities like cycling, running/walking, kite surfing, kayaking, and boating.
