The Waihi town and Waikino small settlement, are both located in Hauraki district at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula, close to the western end of Bay of Plenty region.
Especially notable for their rich history in gold mining, it can be found relics from the early gold rush days at the The Goldfields vintage railway that runs between Waihī and Waikino. They also offer easy access to the iconic Hauraki Rail Trail and the impressive Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway. The cascades of the Owharoa Falls lie just to the southwest of Waikino settlement and the area is characterized by its scenic beauty with lush landscapes.
Waihī town is proud of its heritage for its remarkable old buildings, and an increasing number of cafés and restaurants in the recently revived town centre, as well as a small selection of accommodation, which makes the area attractive to move in for its real community feel.
Waihī Beach is a short distance drive away from both locations, where locals and tourists can swim or surf anywhere along the 9km of strechy sandy beach.
